We Colorado's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Denver rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Denver pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Denver Rodent Removal Tip:
Do rats pose a threat to dogs, cats, or other pets?
A common concern for pet-owners is the animal's exposure to the various wildlife that has been known to make a nest on their property. From snakes to possums and of course, to rats, there's no shortage of dangers that your pet is exposed to during a normal day.
In this article, we'll look at just how much of a threat rats are to dogs, cats, and other pets, as well as what you can do to prevent such dangers.
What are the main risks?
As we all well know, rats (as well as the other rodents classified as pests) are carriers of various bacteria and diseases, with which they can easily infect those around them. Some of the most well-known diseases that rats can spread include: hantavirus, Tularemia, Salmonella, and choriomeningitis.
When it comes to the interactions between rats and pets, there are quite a few concerns, such as:
- Toxoplasmosis is an ailment caused by the protozoan parasite, which can cause quite a lot of damage, particularly along the central nervous system, as well as smaller symptoms, such as diarrhea. Rats that have been infected with the protozoan parasite pose a particular threat to dogs, who will display the above symptoms. Cats, on the other hand, are less at risk, with the parasite threatening to infect their digestive system, but eventually be eliminated by the feline through defecation.
- Roundworms are another big concern when it comes to pet-rat interactions. Roundworms usually cause various intestinal issues, such as diarrhea, distended round belly, and other such symptoms. Roundworms can be passed to both dogs and cats, and even more worryingly, to the human owner by the infected pet. In humans, roundworm causes fever, diarrhea, vision loss, and others.
- Leptospirosis, commonly known as lepto, is another major concern that typically affects cattle and rodents. While the symptoms of lepto aren't really present for rats, it is a majorly damaging affliction for both cats and dogs, that will impact their urinary systems, to the point of crippling them for life, or even death. Like roundworms, lepto can be passed on to humans by their pets.
- Hantavirus is a serious threat that causes major pulmonary damage, and often, even death. It is passed from rats to dogs, mainly, and while dogs have been known to develop antibodies to it, the hantavirus can often prove fatal to humans.
So, how do rats transmit these diseases?
There are a number of ways in which an infected rodent can transmit any of the above diseases to your beloved pet. It's quite common for the pet to become infected after it ingests an infected rat. This is often the result of rat poison or some other wound that has caused the rat to die and then be eaten. Of course, when a rat ingests poison, that also poses a threat to your pet's wellbeing, because they will then also ingest the rat poison.
Rats can also infect your pets by biting them. In general, rats are more likely to run rather than fight, but this is purely a strategic decision on their part. Rats are less afraid of pets as they would be of humans, and if they feel confronted, they will lash out at your pet.
Lastly, rat droppings also pose a threat to your pets. As is their habit, your pet may go to inspect the droppings and thus come into contact with the various diseases the rat in question carried.
